BIS IS 10500:2012 is India’s official drinking water quality standard, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It covers over 80 parameters and defines two levels of limits for each — an Acceptable Limit (ideal, no health concerns) and a Permissible Limit (tolerable only when no better source exists). Every water test report in India, every water treatment plant, and every certified purifier manufacturer uses this standard as the benchmark.
The acceptable limit is the ideal, desirable quality level water at or below this level is safe with no health concerns. The permissible limit applies only when no alternative water source is available using water regularly at permissible levels rather than acceptable levels may carry long-term health implications for certain parameters. Never treat permissible limits as your target always aim for acceptable limits.
IS 10500:2012 does not apply to packaged drinking water, which is covered by a separate and stricter standard — IS 14543. Home purifiers producing water that meets IS 10500:2012 acceptable limits provide comparable safety to quality packaged water, at a fraction of the long-term cost.
Based on CGWB groundwater quality data, the states with the highest groundwater parameter exceedances are Rajasthan (fluoride, TDS, hardness, nitrate), Gujarat (fluoride, TDS, hardness), Punjab and Haryana (nitrate, pesticides), West Bengal, Bihar, UP, and Assam (arsenic), and coastal states (chloride, salinity). If you live in any of these states, a multi-stage RO purifier is not optional — it is essential.
